Livestock
Coast region population also relies on livestock economy with the major source of income being local zebu cattle. Improved dairy cattle are also reared in all councils especially in the peri-urban areas. Other domestic animals which support population livelihood are goats, sheep, donkeys, pigs and poultry.
Livestock Population
The Region has 673,991 cattle (633,942 indigenous, 32,508 dairy and 7,541 beef), 272,432 goats, 121,675 sheep, 20,830 pigs, 3,112 donkey and 3,187,097 chickens (1,220,069 indigenous, 1,132,796 broilers and 834,232 layers). Chalinze have the highest number of cattle (258,370) followed by Kisarawe (87,827), Rufiji (83,197), Kibaha (73,996), Kibiti (68,294), Bagamoyo (44,415), Mkuranga (37,515), Mafia (13,365) and Kibaha Town Council (7,012).
Chalinze have also the highest number of goats (155,639) followed by Kisarawe (33,698), Kibaha (21,393), Rufiji (16,765), Kibiti (16,062), Mkuranga (12,990), Bagamoyo (10,518), Kibaha Town (5,229) and Mafia (138). Large numbe of sheep is found in Chalinze (65,340), followed by Bagamoyo (17,430), Kisarawe (12,092), Kibaha (11,218), Rufiji (6,175), Kibiti (4,327), Mkuranga (4,157), Kibaha Town (838) and Mafia (98). Chicken are highly populated in Kisarawe (682,297) followed by Bagamoyo (609,039), Kibaha Town (532,526), Kibaha (427,341), Mkuranga (296,555), Chalinze (266,336), Kibiti (238,361), Rufiji (110,742) and Mafia (23,900).
Livestock products
Various products obtained from livestock include 14,752,764 liters of milk, 6,484 kg of meat, 2,617,457 trays of eggs, 789,282 pices of hides and 21,610 pices of skins.
